Searching Usenet Newsgroups
Updated 4/9/97 Usenet is the largest public discussion forum in the world. These sites help you get a grip on the tens of thousands of news groups, offering better ways to browse and search. Plus, you don't need access to a dedicated news server. (See also the Usenet Newsgroups toolkit.)

AltaVista
You get the full range of AltaVista search options, but you can't see postings in the context of a thread. The results are not always comprehensive.

Deja News
Featuring more than 20,000 newsgroups and a variety of search options, Deja News offers accurate and thorough returns and proves the best total Usenet search solution on the Web.

Excite
Though you don't have any search options geared toward newsgroups, you receive high-quality returns and can search Usenet classifieds exclusively.

HotBot
Strong news searching is one of HotBot's many strengths. You can view individual articles and link to related articles in the thread. Clicking on the Usenet newsgroup link launches your news reader.

Infoseek
Infoseek does offer a method of scrolling through a threaded discussion, even if you cannot view the thread all at one time. It lacks newsgroup-specific filter options.

Reference.COM
More than 18,000 archived newsgroups, mailing-list searching, and the ability to save frequently run queries make Reference.COM a very solid choice for Usenet searching.
