XML: Extensible Markup Language
Updated 8/1/97
Like HTML, XML is a simplified subset of SGML (Standard Generalized Markup Language). But where HTML has a strictly defined set of tags, XML allows designers to create new tags that define both structure and data. This extensibility will make sophisticated Web applications possible without plug-ins or proprietary HTML extensions. For a look at how XML will change the Web, see the ZDNet Anchordesk story The Excitement Over XML.
