Welcome to UnixManual.com the online unix manual, with tutorials, help, and training in unix commands.

This site covers every aspect of working with Unix operating systems such as Linux, Solaris, Irix, etc.

In addition to a full list of commands with detailed explanation, you will find help guides, tutorials, and tips on getting started.

The thousands of commands available to you are all separate applications.
When you type 'vi' you are calling up the program called 'vi' in the same way that typing 'pwd' calls up the 'pwd' application.

Unix is confusing to new users mostly because of its lack of a GUI (graphical user interface).

Unix comes in many 'flavors'. Standards arise and are embraced because it is very convenient to not have to learn a new system just because you are on a different type of computer.
Microsoft and Netscape have found it preferable, in designing their web clients, to deviate from the w3c conventions in some respects, and sometimes create their own standards.
In the same way, Sun's Solaris, SGI's Irix, Linux and many other versions of Unix share a common core of commands, but have written their own in addition.

So, the commands here are describing generalized versions, in many cases, the command you have access to willhave additional features not seen in these examples.
